Week of Sept 21st

We started our school week with a bang! We had the first day of our new co-op that I started. We have 10 families and 26 kids. David had a Geography class, Game/Snack time, and an Art class. Hannah had an Art class, Geography Class, and GA History class. We stayed and ate lunch with our new friends. We had science lab right after with our Lab Partners.

We took my sister (and Roxie!) home. The kids were sad to see them go. The rest of the week was filled with regular school work. We studied Friendship in "The Book of Virtues". We learned the five "I Wills of Wisdom". We began "The Wind in the Willows" as a read-aloud. I'm not sure the kids are liking it very well. We also learned about Gutenburg and the influence he had on our society. We had our normal week of math, grammar, and such. The kids really enjoyed receiving their God's World News magazines. Hannah is working on a news show to present the information to her Daddy and me.

Hannah also started a writing class that will be 4 weeks. It is being offered free by a retired English teacher. It is to specifically teach the essay style needed for SAT's.

New Experiences

My sister came to visit with us a few days and brought her new dog, Roxie, with her. The kids don't have any pets, much less one in the house, so this was a brand new experience for them. They had a great time. David has been afraid of dogs for a long time, and this really helped him deal with that fear. By the 2nd day of her being here, he was saying, "I think I'm in love with a dog!". We were sad she had to leave. She's a great dog, and fun to be around. The kids are going to be asking to visit their aunt even more now.

Week of Sept 14th

We had an unusual week. We had a meeting about our new co-op, then left town to go to see my grandmother. She had been in the hospital for a week, and was moved to a rehab nursing home. It's hard to see her like that, but I pray she is going to benefit from the rehab. We stayed at her house and did school work while we were there. In bible we began a study of relationship, beginning with honoring your parents. In history, we read about Joan of Arc and more of the reformation. Hannah researched knights for a paper she's writing. David did a study of fire safety for boy scouts. They both read library books of their choosing, in addition to some of mine. We had a short week of school. Besides the trip, my sister came home with us for a visit.

6th Week

Another week of school is behind us. We had a great week. Monday was Labor Day and Daddy was off, so we only did a little school and spent some time with him. That night I went to a Mom's meeting with my homeschool group. It was about scheduling and record keeping. A night out with other Mom's is very refreshing.

We hit the books the rest of the week. We finished up our study of wisdom in Proverbs. The kids are both studying the Reformation and Martin Luther this week, so we got the movie "Luther" to watch. Hannah is reading a biography, too. We acted out vocabulary words, and did "trick" sentences (the kids have to fill in the right vocabulary word). Hannah is moving along in Physics and will have lab every week with some friends. She went to her new novel club where they discussed "The Outsiders" and watched the movie. David has been studying nutrition, so we went on a grocery store treasure hunt I found at www. mypyramid.gov. He's also enjoyed playing their online game, too.

Grammar, math, and critical thinking workbooks are used almost everyday around here. We also watched a Nest DVD about Leonardo Da Vinci and an HBO composer series DVD called "Bach's Fight for Freedom". Hannah finished up reading the book "Mummies in the Morning" with David. We finished up the day with talking about 9/11 and watching some tributes on the internet.

Where to go?

We have been in the process of possibly finding a new church. We really want to be in the place that God wants us to be. We visited somewhere yesterday that we really liked, but we only want to be there if it's where He wants us to be. I pray that God will give us direction. We need Him to show us the way!

Grandpa!

We went to South Carolina to see Darin's grandfather. His birthday is next week and he'll be 96! It was great seeing him and spending time with him. He is doing well for his age and hopes to make it to 100.

5th Week

We continued our study of wisdom this week in our Bible time. We are using a book called "Searching for Treasure". David is reading more and more. He is recalling math facts very well and has been doing a study of health and nutrition. He read a book about about the life of William Shakespeare. Hannah began her science curriculum and enjoyed having "Lab Day" with some friends. She read some summaries of William Shakespeare's work. We watched a movie version of MacBeth. It was the actual wording from the play. We decided to not have her read the actual play at this time. We do not have the time or energy into trying to decode all of that language right now. She read "The Outsiders" for her novel club. Next week they meet to discuss the book and watch the movie.

We went bowling with our friends, the Klemms. Here's David having a pretend "tantrum" in the floor when he didn't hit any pins.

Jenny and her family have become very dear to me. It's great having a friend like her.

Our own Jedi Academy

Our kids LOVE, LOVE, LOVE Star Wars. The new season for The Clone Wars is only about a month away. They can't wait!

4th Week

We spent our 4th week seeing family and helping take care of some of them. We did do some school work, mostly reading for history, playing math games, studying wisdom in our bible study, and some writing. We stayed with my nephew for 4 nights while my sister and b-i-l went away for their anniversary. We then stayed with my grandmother for 2 nights while my mother had a doctor appointment out of town. It's always great to get to spend time with our families. We have a close bond that I don't see in some other family groups.

3rd Week

We finished our third week of school with a fun event. Daddy took a day off work. We were leaving the next day to go out of town for a whole week, so we wanted to spend some fun time together.

We decided to go bowling, our new found activity over the summer. We hadn't been bowling for years, and forgot how fun it is. Hannah wanted a picture in action...she's such the set-up the scene girl.

Here's David after he made is first strike. He's playing air guitar to celebrate, what a ham!

As you can see, Daddy got a big strike, too! They come by it naturally.

Other than that the week was quite peaceful. We did get the Magic Treehouse first four books. Hannah wants to read them to David. I think it will be a good bonding time for them. She read them years ago, and loved them. I think he will, too. He isn't the "fiction" reader that Hannah is, but he loves non-fiction books. They are opposite in so many things, I guess they will be in that, too.
